What Actually Anchors A Southern Highlands Summer In 2026

For a long time, if you asked someone what Southern Highlands "was," the answer came back in one word: golf. The Robert Trent Jones Jr. course behind the gates set the tone, and the rest of the community read like supporting cast. That framing is still on the brochures. It no longer matches how residents actually spend a July week.

Three public-facing anchors now do the real work. A Strip-caliber restaurant on Cactus Avenue owns the dinner slot. A family park off the Parkway owns daylight and the weekly outdoor movie. A lit-field sports complex on Starr Hills owns the two hours before the sun clears the ridge and the last hour before it drops behind it. The private club is still there. It is no longer the schedule.

That shift is the point of this post. If you have been in Southern Highlands for a few years and feel like the neighborhood got denser and more usable without adding much square footage, this is why.

The Morton Bet On Cactus Avenue Was A Signal

The freshest anchor is the easiest to underrate because it looks, from the outside, like just another neighborhood Italian spot. It is not. Jenna and Michael Morton, the restaurateurs behind three places on the Strip, opened Nudo Italiano in May in the Southern Highlands community as their take on a neighborhood Italian spot, with spicy calamari with lemon aïoli, diavola pizza topped with ciliegine mozzarella balls and spicy salami, pappardelle with veal ragù, and pan-roasted branzino with roasted cherry tomatoes. The address is 4390 W. Cactus Ave.

Read the move as a market signal rather than a menu. Operators at that level do not put a full-format restaurant six miles off the Strip unless they have decided the local dinner audience is real, steady, and willing to spend at Strip-adjacent price points on a Tuesday. Nudo Italiano is a family-owned restaurant from local restaurateurs Jenna Morton and Michael Morton, designed to feel like a warm embrace, with a cozy dining room, a bustling bar, and a lively patio, and at the heart of the menu is Chef William DeMarco's approach to Italian simplicity with handmade pastas, house-baked breads, and Neapolitan-style pizzas fired in a traditional wood oven.

What that means for a resident: the reason to leave the community for a nice dinner has shrunk. The reason for someone in Summerlin to drive south for one has grown.

Why Goett Owns The Daylight

If Nudo is the newest piece, Goett Family Park is the piece that quietly does the most work between May and October. Goett Family Park serves as the community's flagship recreation space, located at 10950 Southern Highlands Parkway, and features the Jaynes Family Splash Park, basketball courts, covered playgrounds, a large gazebo, and open grass fields. The Jaynes Family Splash Park runs seasonally through October 1st, which is the actual boundary of "splash pad summer" here, not a calendar date.

The park also functions as the community's outdoor cinema. Movies in the Park takes place at Goett Family Park during the summer, starting at 8 p.m., with residents bringing blankets, lawn chairs, and family-friendly drinks. Watch the HOA calendar for the specific dates each summer; the format does not change.

The same park picks up the baton in the fall. The Southern Highlands Fall Festival returns to Goett Family Park on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Which matters right now, in mid-July, because it is the one date on the second half of the year that tends to fill quickly with vendor booths and volunteer slots. Residents who want a booth or a sponsorship spot generally start the conversation in summer, not September.

Olympia Sports Park Handles The Edges Of The Day

The third anchor is the one that has grown up quietly since it opened. Olympia Sports Park opened in 2018 and features lighted fields, workout stations, basketball courts, and trails with Las Vegas Strip views. In practice, "lighted" is the operative word during a Southern Nevada summer. It shifts adult league play, family soccer, and the last-mile walk into windows a resident can actually stand outside in.

It is also where the community's biggest single-day event landed this year. The Southern Highlands Memorial Day Celebration was held Monday, May 25, 2026, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Olympia Sports Park, 4885 Starr Hills Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89141. A decade ago that event lived closer to the golf-club side of the community. It is now on the sports-park side. The center of gravity moved.

Between Goett and Olympia, the connector is on foot. The Paseo hiking and biking trail winds throughout Southern Highlands, connecting neighborhoods and parks, providing a route for jogging, dog walking, and cycling without leaving the community. The Paseo is why you can, in a single evening, park once and let a family split between splash pad, pickup basketball, and a lit-field workout.

The Two Saturdays That Do The Connective Tissue

Between the three anchors, there is a rhythm most residents miss until someone points it out. Twice a month, the neighborhood behaves differently on a Saturday morning. The Southern Highlands Farmers Market runs the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 11411 Southern Highlands Parkway. That address is the SH Corporate Center, not either retail center, which is why people who only know Marketplace and the Costco anchor down the road can live here for a year without stumbling into it.

There is also a new tenant queued up on the retail side that will change how a Saturday errand loop feels. Per Nevada state licensing filings, Capriotti's is opening at 11350 Southern Highlands Parkway, Suite 125. Small opening, meaningful in aggregate: the retail centers keep filling in with regional operators rather than sitting on vacancy, which is not a given in south-valley strip centers this cycle.

If you moved in before Nudo opened and before the Memorial Day event moved to Olympia, your mental map of this neighborhood is out of date. The good news is the new map is smaller. Most of what is worth doing sits inside a two-mile square.

A Week That Actually Uses The Neighborhood

Here is the same set of facts arranged the way a resident actually lives them, not the way a brochure organizes them.

Monday and Tuesday. Olympia Sports Park at 6 a.m. or after 7 p.m. The lit fields and the Strip-view trail segments do the heavy lifting when the pavement is 105 at 4 p.m. Save Nudo Italiano for Tuesday if you want a bar seat without a wait.

Wednesday. The middle of the week is the quietest at Goett. If your household has small kids, the Jaynes Family Splash Park is calmer at 10 a.m. midweek than any weekend hour, and it runs through October 1.

Thursday. Reservation night at Nudo. Patio if the wind is down, dining room if it is not.

Friday. Movies in the Park when the HOA schedules one, blanket and chairs at Goett by 7:45 p.m. for an 8 p.m. start.

Saturday. If it is the 2nd or 4th of the month, the farmers market at 11411 Southern Highlands Parkway from 9 to 2. If it is not, the Paseo trail loop before it gets hot, then a stop at whatever is newest in the Marketplace strip.

Sunday. Reserve. Southern Highlands is the rare Las Vegas community where a Sunday can genuinely stay inside the gates.

What The Pattern Tells You About The Neighborhood

Three things are worth saying out loud, because they read differently once you see the anchors as a system rather than a list.

First, the community's daily texture is no longer built around the golf club. It is built around a restaurant, a park, and a sports complex, all of them open to the public in one form or another. That changes who the neighborhood works for. A family with two kids under ten and no interest in a country-club membership can now use Southern Highlands to its full weekly capacity, which was not obviously true five years ago.

Second, the retail centers are the connective tissue, not the destination. Southern Highlands Marketplace offers locals a shopping, dining, and services hub with Smith's Food & Drug as its anchor, Ace Hardware and New Balance among the retailers, services from Great Clips, and dining options including Dragon Tiger Noodle Co., Hola Mexican Cocina + Cantina, and Spaghetty Western. Read that as a utility grid. The anchors above are where a week gets its shape.

Third, the entity worth watching is the operator who chose Cactus Avenue over another Strip corner. When Strip-tier hospitality decides a neighborhood restaurant is a defensible bet at a specific address, that is a piece of local information you cannot pull off a portal. It tells you something about the household ledger of the people who already live here.

If you are already in Southern Highlands, none of this asks you to move, list, or shop. It asks you to use what is here. If you are thinking about the neighborhood for a future move and you want to talk through how these anchors line up against the parts of Las Vegas and Henderson you are also considering, I am happy to walk it with you.
